A spokeswoman for Kidman told The Wrap that the actress is yet to reach a deal but liked the script. Meanwhile, Noyce who directed 2010's "Salt" is already attached to direct. Before him, Nick Cassavetes was vetted to direct but was let go and he later sued New Line before dropping it altogether. "Dark Water" helmer Walter Salles was at one point also in negotiations to direct.
Mandalay Pictures is producing with a budget of over $50 million. Two distributors are close to signing to release the film domestically and internationally. Production is due to start in September.
The film will revolve around Sheldrick's efforts to rescue animals, particularly elephants, from the brutal "training" in South Africa. The 76-year-old and her husband, now deceased, were co-warden at Kenya's giant Tsavo National Park. She was featured in 3D IMAX film "Born to Be Wild".
